We Bought a Castle & It's a Disaster
This is a full tour of the castle house after the demolition. Renovations begin in the next video, so stay tuned! We will do as much DIY, and learn as much homestead skills as we can. We could try and be a castle version of Eamon and Bec lol.

The only thing more annoying than the roof leaking is the crawl spaces flooding. This water has caused a ton of damage and means oldhouse restoration and renovations will take much longer. Thanks! Yes and also even if the wood wasn't rotted - it's would be impossible to put aa new roof on without removing them anyway as they sit on the roof for support.

Thanks ! We've been at it for 4years and still needs work. Lots of construction mistakes when it was built, kind of the Ponderosa look and everything is on angles and nothing squares up.
My Cousins live in Santa Fe...I've always seen the "Castle" everytime we visited there. I'm 45, so no telling how long it's been there. Its also located on Hwy 6, literally can't miss it because of the horses & Gate...

It's still beautiful. I thought you were supposed to do the roof first before anything else.
Normally yes but this is a complete rebuild. Just like building a house, start from the ground up.
With all the rain you get you should build a moat around the castle and pump all the rain from the roof and crawl space into the moat!

This is awesome! I have an affinity for old buildings especially castles. I heard about this one when I was dating a girl from Sante Fe. I never saw it but I always wanted to. I would most definitely buy one if given the chance. I love a fixer upper. The nothing that would make more proud than seeing what I have done and accomplished from the labor of love. Furthermore you have earned my subscription because I am here for the journey.

"Where do you start?" You start by starting over. I would rebuild right next to the old castle. Reuse what you could from the original and tear down the rest after the new one is built.

Ground water removal idea 1 5gal Bucket with lid Gravel Filter fabric Sump Pump with water level switch Find the deepest part of the subfloor area.. .Dig a hole big enough to get a 5 gallon bucket in. dig it a bit wider so you can put gravel around the bucket. Take bucket and drill a LOT of .5inch holes all around it. Wrap the outside of the bucket with Filter Fabric (What is used for French Drain installs) Put bucket down in the hole, put gravel around the bucket Put your Sump pump down in the bucket. Put the lid on the bucket (keeps critters out) If its low enough the ground water will find its way to the low spot and will filter through the gravel through the filter material and into the bucket where your sump will switch on with the water level switch and pump it out. You can (if needed) put pipes from other areas over to the sump pump (put them running into the gravel) and help keep the water down and hopefully help dry out the ground while you work on the house When you have the house dried in you can either leave the pump or pull it out. Gotta get that ground dried out or all your work on the subfloor will just mold/rot
Thanks so much mate. We stopped water getting in but once we get the new roof, we will need to encapsulate the crawl space and go that extra mile with it. The grading outside made a huge difference.
